Spotify Greenroom's Success 2 Weeks After Launch

To launch a voice chat feature, Spotify acquired the Locker Room app, specializing in audio conferencing, in March 2021 and renamed it Greenroom. The app is available on iOS and Android in 135 countries worldwide and is a direct competitor to Clubhouse. But how big is its success so far?

According to the latest statistics, the number of downloads from Google Play is over 100 K, and it’s more than 140 from the App Store. These are not the most impressive numbers for this kind of application. For example, the Clubhouse mentioned above has a total number of installations exceeding 30 million long ago. Another popular app with similar functionality, Airtime, already has over 14 million downloads, while Spoon has about 27 million installs. The number of downloads of foreign audio services (such as Fishbowl and Cappuccino) also significantly exceeds Greenroom's numbers.

When assessing the success of an application, it is important to understand that the number of downloads should not be equated with the amount of registered and even more active users. Spotify launched this service in mid-July, and it is tricky to judge its actual popularity so far. In any case, the overall statistics are not as bright as they could be.

The application features are the same as for many other audio platforms: listeners can join broadcasts, and a presenter can give them the opportunity to speak. In total, rooms can accommodate up to a thousand users. Greenroom also has text chats that can be turned off, and after a broadcast ends, its recording can be downloaded and edited, for example, to turn it into a podcast. If Spotify manages to develop and implement some unique feature that sets its service apart from many others, its popularity might grow.
