Sony Accused in Restricting Digital Game Sales

Grace Edwards 06 May 2021

Sony stopped selling its digital codes for downloading games on Amazon, Walmart, and other online marketplaces in 2019. Today, it’s in the center of a class-action lawsuit. Why? According to the suit content, the company behaves as a monopoly by restricting users from purchasing PlayStation games anywhere but PlayStation Store. Currently, the prices for PS games are significantly higher than they must be in a competitive environment. Interesting fact: Sony’s physical copies of games are sold cheaper than the digital versions because they have to count with the average prices for games in physical stores.

Due to such an unlawful monopoly, the company can continue to charge supercompetitive prices within its own marketplace. The lawsuit is called to restrict the company from limiting the options available to customers. Judging by the current anti-monopolistic vector of the US government, this case will make Sony return their digital game codes to the major online marketplaces and set lower prices to remain in fair competition.
