Netflix May Launch iOS Games on App Store

Grace Edwards 08 Nov 2021

We all remember why Fortnite was banned on the App Store earlier this year and how tough are Apple App Store’s policies are when it comes to publishing games and apps. According to Bloomberg, Netflix may face a problem with providing its brand new gaming experience natively on its official app. More details are below.

No Choice

The new Netflix Games tab is already available on both iOS and Android apps. However, the app serves only as a launching button that tells your device to launch a separate gaming app. However, Netflix is allowed to merge its games into a single app with the streaming platform on Android, but it’s impossible to do on iOS. The policies of this platform don’t allow app installations from third-party apps stores, so the company will probably be pushed to offer its games only separately from the main app on the App Store. As Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says, the games won’t be technically running inside the app.

The mainstreaming app would still provide access to the game catalog but will redirect you to the App Store for download. It seems that Netflix has to get ready for a big compromise to avoid conflicting with Apple. It’s clear that the two companies are rivals in the streaming niche, but Netflix simply can’t afford to operate without iOS devices that include millions of iPhones, iPads, and Apple TVs. However, the introduction of games adds one more front for the companies to compete on.

No Concessions

Apple has clearly stated that it won’t change its App Store policies and it’s still the second-largest platform provider for app developers including Netflix. Even if Netflix is going to provide its games as cloud-based experiences, they must have individual screenings. How do you think Netflix will get out of this tricky situation?
