Netflix Introduces Its First Oculus VR Game – Eden Unearthed
Netflix is no longer just a streaming service provider – it is now a video game maker ready to dazzle and awe you with its very first VR title called Eden Unearthed. The game is based on the popular sci-fi anime TV series Eden, written by Justin Leach and directed by Yasuhiro Irie in a four-episode TV show that debuted on Netflix in spring 2021.
This free Oculus Quest game is currently on App Lab. It is still undergoing the Oculus review process to eliminate any issues that might interfere with its overall performance.
Eden Unearthed by Netflix: Technical Specs
The game was released in two versions that came out on April 20 and August 3, respectively. Eden Unearthed is a single-player title made compatible with Oculus Quest and Oculus Quest 2 virtual reality headsets. The whole thing requires only a little over 182 MB of free space, and it is played in the sitting position, using the Oculus Touch controllers.
Eden Unearthed by Netflix: Premise
The game features a city colonized by robots called Eden 3, who came to inhabit our planet a thousand years after the last human being disappeared from the face of the earth. Players are sat on a motorcycle and tasked to ride it along several pre-adjusted routes collecting apples and fuel in the process and trying to allow any drops in speed. Along the way, there will be occasional information points, providing a little bit of backstory.
Final Words
The game is much of an experiment – a fishing expedition by Netflix to see how well this kind of product is received by the loyal audience and beyond. There might be some future developments and expansions, but we will have to wait and see.
